Shulton Whitley, Nyack Class of 1977, is Rockland's premier high hurdler. He ranks fourth all-time statewide (13.6 seconds) and for 20 years was the only male athlete to win three individual events at the county meet. He placed second in a photo finish at the 1977 state meet, ran on two county-record sprint relays and earned all-America status at Rutgers. In open competition he qualified for the 1984 U.S. Olympic Trials, and set the still-standing record (13.5) in the 110-meter hurdles at the Empire State Games.
